Representing people with kidney disease in the media

Kidney disease affects one in 10 people; it is common and there is no cure. Despite this, awareness of the condition and how it affects those living with it is very poor. Kidney Care UK works with journalists, researchers and script writers to share kidney patients' stories.

Working with journalists

Our Media and PR Manager is contactable via our online press office and can be contacted by journalists during and outside of office hours to discuss any media stories.

  • We have a range of spokespeople with lived experience of kidney disease who can be interviewed on numerous topics linked to the condition.
  • We can signpost journalists to medical experts.

Looking for a case study?

If you are a journalist and would like to speak to a kidney patient, we will always do what we can to help you find someone living with or affected by kidney disease who is willing to share their story or give an opinion, a quote or a full interview.

If you have a case study request, please contact our Media and PR Manager.

Market research support

We are regularly approached by researchers and market research companies who would like to speak to patients. Unfortunately we cannot help with these requests.

We do have a research opportunities webpage where we can share studies that meet our criteria and are currently open to recruitment. To enquire about including your study on this page, please email [email protected]

For other queries about patient involvement please contact our Patient Ambassador and Involvement Lead Nick Palmer.

Kidney patient stories

People with kidney disease are at the heart of what we do as a charity.

Whether representing patient views in parliament, or championing the stories of our patient community, we want to ensure that experiences of people living with kidney disease are shared and heard.

We have an online community of kidney patients and carers with over 14,000 members which offers us insights into the issues that matter most to kidney patients and affect our community.

We also have a range of patient stories and videos which feature people with kidney disease sharing their experiences to help raise awareness.

TV storylines about living with kidney disease

One of the best ways to raise awareness of health conditions is to raise their profile online, in the media and on TV in soap operas, documentaries and news reports.

We are happy to work with researchers and writers of TV programmes to advise them on the realities of living with kidney disease and the timelines involved in treatments like dialysis and transplant.

While we recognise that soap operas in particular are not a reflection of real life and do not show every aspect of what it can be like to have a condition like kidney disease, we think it is important that the portrayal of the condition is as accurate as possible.

We encourage anyone working on storylines regarding kidney disease to get in touch. We can arrange discussions with patients and medical professionals, as well as visits to dialysis or transplant units. We can also advise on storyline and script development.

Share your story of living with CKD

Personal stories make a huge difference when it comes to raising awareness of what it is really like to live with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Whatever your connection to CKD, we would love to hear from you if you'd be happy to talk about your experience.
