Summary

About 30% of people on haemodialysis have a condition called sarcopenia, defined as low muscle strength and muscle size. An effective and feasible treatment for sarcopenia in people on haemodialysis has not yet been developed. Therefore, it is important that we study the physiology of people receiving haemodialysis treatment to inform treatment methods of sarcopenia.

In this study, we are investigating differences in muscle and nerve function between people on haemodialysis and healthy adults of a similar age.

Currently, we are looking for healthy adults (35-85 years old) to take part. You will be matched by age and sex to our existing group of participants receiving haemodialysis treatment. The study would involve 2 visits to Loughborough University for measures of strength, muscle and nerve function. Each visit will take about 1.5 hours.

Taking part in this research will further our understanding of how the muscular and nervous systems work in people on haemodialysis, and help develop effective treatment methods of sarcopenia. This could greatly improve the quality of life for people with chronic kidney disease. You will also receive a £30 amazon voucher as a thank-you for your time.
