Plans to add organ donation registration option to passport

This Organ Donation Week, NHS Blood and Transplant, the Department of Health and Social Care and the Home Office announced a commitment to add an option in the passport application process that will allow people to register their organ donation decision.

From next year, adults applying to renew their passport will be able to confirm their support for organ donation on the NHS Organ Donor Register as part of the application process.

Kidney Care UK supports this commitment to boost organ donation registration and save more lives today and in the future.

Fiona Loud, Policy Director at Kidney Care UK, said: "We welcome the commitment from the Home Office, making it easier to save more lives, and the discussions that this simple act will also encourage up and down the country. With the number of people waiting for a transplant at the highest it's been for almost a decade we need urgent action to bring these numbers down. Introducing an easy and simple opportunity to register your organ donation decision as part of the passport process could have a significant impact in reducing the number of people waiting for that life-changing call for a transplant.”
