Local NHS worker Hannah Fawcett and bicycle instructor and mechanic Ede Harrison have raised over £3,500 for Kidney Care UK and set a new women's record for a tandem cycle between Land's End and John O'Groats, cycling 841 miles in 66 hours, 49 minutes and 52 seconds.
Setting off on the morning of Sunday 15 September, the pair comfortably beat their target to cycle across Great Britain in less than three days, while raising awareness of kidney disease and fundraising for the UK's leading kidney patient support charity.
Hannah works as an NHS kidney consultant at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Ede works as a bike mechanic and cycling instructor in Leeds. The pair trained for 10 months in preparation for their record-setting feat.
I see the first hand effect that kidney disease has on people in Liverpool every day. It’s not just the person with the disease, their whole family feels the impact. I’m lucky to have also seen the amazing work that Kidney Care UK does to support thousands of people with this disease and we couldn’t have chosen a better charity to support.Hannah Fawcett
Kidney Care UK provides practical, emotional and financial support to kidney patients and their families. The charity also campaigns at a national and government level to improve kidney health and care services as well as funding patient-centred projects to help improve care services throughout the UK.
Jasmine Williams, Challenge Events Manager at Kidney Care UK, adds: “We can’t thank Hannah and Ede enough for all they are doing to raise awareness of kidney disease. We receive no government funding so we rely on the generosity of our kind supporters and fundraisers, like Hannah and Ede. Their support will help us to ensure that no one faces kidney disease alone.”
As well as setting the World Record, Hannah and Ede smashed their fundraising aim of £1,000. You can still contribute to their online fundraiser here.
