Exploring neurodivergence amongst altruistic kidney donors

Aim of the study

We aim to explore the decision-making processes and lived experiences of neurodivergent altruistic kidney donors. We hope this can help us to understand and improve the care of neurodivergent kidney donors.

Study type

60 minute video interview (Microsoft Teams)

Who is able to participate?

People aged 18 and over who have previously donated a kidney to a stranger (surgery should be at least 6 months ago) and who are also autistic and/or have ADHD (either formally diagnosed or self-diagnosed).

Where is the study happening?

It is based in North-East England (South Tees Hopsitals NHS Foundation Trust) however you can participate from your own home/any private venue of your choosing via Microsoft Teams.

Summary

Being a living person and donating a kidney to a stranger (altruistic kidney donation) is a unique decision to make; a decision that can be life changing and life saving for the recipient of that kidney. There is no available research about people with Autism or ADHD who choose to donate a kidney to a stranger. In one renal centre in the North-East of England, we have noticed signs of Autism and ADHD among people who come forward to donate a kidney to a stranger.

We want to explore using interviews:

  • Why people with Autism /ADHD would chose to donate a kidney to a stranger
  • What the whole process was like for them
  • If they think there is anything that needs to be improved about the process and care for future donors

We hope this could help improve the healthcare and support of any future donors with Autism/ADHD who wish to donate a kidney. We also hope this could guide us in to further research areas in the future.

We aim to interview 6-10 neurodivergent people who have donated a kidney to a stranger. The interviews will be transcribed and analysed to find any important themes.
