For our African and Caribbean Recipes magazine, the Kidney Kitchen team and our working group (Charlene Rose, Tadala Kolawole and Timilehin Omilana) have created a flavour-packed range of delicious, kidney-friendly meals from Africa and the Caribbean.

Each recipe in African and Caribbean Recipes (and on the Kidney Kitchen website) has been approved by the British Dietetic Association Kidney Dietitian Specialist Group (KDSG) as being safe for people living with CKD to eat.

  • Yam potage with crispy turkey wings

    This delicious and traditional yam potage with crispy turkey wings is easy to make. Try using one or two scotch bonnets instead of red chilli to give it that extra kick.

  • Caribbean beef patties

    These traditionally Caribbean beef patties make a great main meal when served with this colourful salad.

  • South African beef stew with sadza

    This tasty and warming stew can be made a day in advance and kept in an airtight container in the fridge. Be sure to reheat thoroughly before serving.

  • Jerk chicken with rice and peas

    This high-protein meal is delicious and the fresh and spicy marinade gives a real depth of flavour to the chicken.

  • Curry mutton with rice

    This recipe takes time to make, but if you make it in advance, the flavours develop and then it simply needs reheating thoroughly to serve with the freshly cooked rice.

  • Okra and chicken stew

    This traditional dish is easy to make and provides a nutritious, high-protein meal.

  • Moroccan lamb tagine

    With tender lamb and full of warming spices, this one-pot, high-protein recipe is great for special occasions.

  • Caribbean peppered prawns with coconut rice

    A quick and easy prawn dish that’s low in phosphate, potassium and salt.

  • Moin-Moin

    This traditional, healthy meal is easy to prepare and a great source of protein and energy.

  • Nigerian jollof rice with salmon

    This healthy, wholesome meal provides a good protein source along with plenty of vegetables. It takes time, but it’s worth it!

  • Red snapper with Caribbean boiled dumplings and coleslaw

    A delicious and nutritious meal, providing a good amount of protein and energy. This recipe has lots of elements to it, but the result is worth it! Best eaten freshly made.

  • Jamaican Easter bun

    This traditional Jamaican sweet treat is typically enjoyed during Easter and served with cheese. To reduce the salt and phosphate content, the bun could be served with (unsalted) butter instead of cheese.

  • Mango and coconut cheesecake pots

    This delicious and luxurious dessert is perfect for special occasions. Simple to make, it will keep in the fridge for up to three days.

  • Moroccan orange slices

    This low-calorie dessert is quick and easy, and best eaten freshly made.

  • Jamaican cornmeal porridge

    This wholesome, high-energy breakfast is gluten-free and vegan, and very easy to make.

  • Banana bread

    Using just one banana, this recipe is a delicious low potassium and low salt option to enjoy for a tasty treat or dessert.
