The Difficult Conversations booklet

Difficult Conversations is a guide for kidney health professionals having conversations with people with kidney failure, and their family members, about treatment and care.

Difficult Conversations: Talking with people about kidney failure, end of life and advance care planning aims to build on health professionals’ existing skills to help make end of life conversations a more ordinary and frequent part of practice.

The Difficult Conversations Booklet

The booklet was informed with evidence from people with kidney failure, and their family members, about their experiences of end of life kidney care.

It is designed to support routine kidney care management and can be used in the consultation, as a reference guide, or as part of a training package.

A project grant from Kidney Care UK and the UK Kidney Association (2020-2022) funded the booklet’s development.

The study team was led by Dr Anna Winterbottom (St James University Hospital, Leeds), in collaboration with a team of clinicians, academics, palliative care specialists and people with kidney disease.
