    Kidney transplant patients will now get double matched blood to reduce sensitisation and rejection

    NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is rolling out a programme to introduce ‘double-matched’ blood transfusions to 24 kidney transplant units across England, with the aim of reducing the number of people waiting years for kidney transplants and people facing kidney transplant rejection. The programme could prevent up to 100 transplants being rejected every year.

    Treatment for high potassium extended to more patients in Scotland

    Following a decision made this week by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC), adults living in Scotland who have hyperkalaemia (high potassium) will now, in certain circumstances, be able to access a medicine called sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (Lokelma) via the NHS.

    NHS Blood and Transplant calls on people to register their decision to be an organ donor

    NHS Blood and Transplant is calling on one million people in the UK to register their decision to be an organ donor by the start of 2027, as figures show over 7,000 people are currently waiting for an organ transplant.

    Disappointment at NICE draft decision not to recommend a new drug for rare kidney condition

    Pegcetacoplan (Aspaveli), a new medicine for people with rare kidney conditions C3 glomerulopathy (C3G) and immune complex membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (IC-MPGN), is not recommended as an NHS funded treatment following a NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) draft recommendation published Friday 13 March.

    Kidney Care UK and pharmacists sound the alarm on ibuprofen and kidney health

    A Kidney Care UK survey has found that three quarters of people living with kidney disease were not aware that certain over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen can affect the kidneys. Working with the National Pharmacy Association, we are urging patients to be aware of the risks of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
