We’re working closely with members of the United Utilities team to make sure their phone operators are trained to understand the needs of people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and how much their condition affects a person’s life.
Our training means team members understand how important it is for people with CKD to be able to get in touch with their Priority Services Team, so that they can ensure customers are on the right tariff, and know how where to access information about additional financial support.
In partnership, we aim to support around 55,000 people living with CKD in the most deprived areas of the network in Liverpool, Manchester, Salford and Preston.

Latest updates on our partnership
Working Together: Vulnerability Summit at Blackpool Football Stadium, 8 May 2024
We were delighted to join United Utilities team members at the Vulnerability Summit this May. Sharing the day with over 100 other industry leaders, we explored challenges, ideas and solutions to strengthen our joint support for people across the North West. It was a great opportunity to hold in-depth conversations about the needs of people with CKD, and the extra challenges that can arise during supply interruptions and emergency situations. We welcomed the chance to raise the profile of kidney patients and their needs as part of our partnership.
'Wear it blue' for World Kidney Day 2024
Team members at United Utilities raised an amazing £876 with their 'Wear it blue' day for this year's World Kidney Day (14 March). As well as fundraising, staff also raised vital awareness of CKD within their teams.
We're looking forward to future activities together, including their support for Kidney Care UK in the Great North Run, September 2024.
Steph Smith, the Vulnerable Customer Engagement Lead at United Utilities said: “We believe our partnership allows us to provide vital support to people with chronic kidney disease in our region when they need it most. People with kidney disease can sign up to our Priority Service register, where they can receive extra support in the event of a disruption to their water supply. I was blown away by the engagement we got relating to World Kidney Day from the teams here – everyone pulled together to raise awareness and it was such a great example of how working together really can make a difference.”
